Jesus grew up in the town of Nazareth. Like other boys, he was most likely educated in the town synagogue. He would have spoken the local Aramaic language, but learned to read the Hebrew of the Scriptures (Old Testament) and probably also had a working knowledge of the Greek language, the dominant language of business. He learned a trade and worked for several years as a carpenter. The people of Nazareth knew this Jesus. For centuries, people have been awaiting a Messiah to lead them to the Kingdom of God. There was peace inside this world, but it was the uneasy peace that comes when a conquered people who must bow to a foreign master and its occupying forces. Thus, an unstable peace, in the land that God had promised the descendants of Abraham.
It is here that the paradox (mystery) now unfolds. The promised Messiah was right with them, and the people residing within the town could actually listen to, touch and even see Him with their own eyes. The world’s greatest Christian leader was a humble carpenter. He had a way of leadership, which won many hearts because of its simplicity. His teachings were so noble and beautiful and yet he spoke with power and authority. We are called to follow his footsteps, to be his hands, feet and eyes in a world that is different to that of Nazareth.
